Description
The Lahaul Spiti is the second largest district in Indian Union. The meaning of Spiti is the “Middle Land” as it lies between India and Tibet. It is located in north-eastern part of Himalayas in India and is also known as cold desert mountain valley. The valley is the path to the northernmost areas of India. Near the river Spiti, the sub-divisional headquarters is situated, known as Kaza. It’s around 12,500 feet (3,800 m) over the sea level.
The surroundings of the district are high mountain ranges. The higher Kunzum Pass separates Lahul and Spiti. The oldest monasteries of the world are here – Tabo Monastery and Key Monastery and favorite of Dalai Lama as well. It is scenery location, thus cinematography in the Indian films.
In summer, Spiti is the home to the many goat and sheep herders (Gaddis). They came to this area when snow starts melting in summer and moves before the first snowfall. Animals graze here and nearby areas surrounding around 250 km.
Transportation
This beautiful valley is accessible throughout the year. In summers, this region is reachable via Manali which is 201 km away from the sub-divisional headquarters – Kaza. It is convenient to go here via Kinnaur from Shimla in any month.
